HFL is the UK's pre-eminent sports drug surveillance and pharmaceutical contract research organisation. Already users of ACT! they decided the time had come to move up to SalesLogix and they used DMC Software to make the process painless.
Nick Burroughs is the Financial Controller of HFL and is also responsible for innovation in knowledge sharing. We asked him to tell us a little bit more about HFL's business and how SalesLogix is a big part of it.
"At HFL about 50% of what we do is drug testing for various sports, primarily horse and dog racing," he explains. "We also do a lot of work for human sport testing too and we hope to be involved in the drug testing for the Olympics in 2012."
HFL also test for the pharmaceutical industry where its track record in delivery, coupled with its world-class accredited laboratories, have made it the first choice for many leading names in the pharma industry. It's not a reputation they're prepared to risk by using inadequate CRM solutions.
Getting their ACT! together
HFL had already been using ACT! for just over five years but Nick is quick to admit that they hadn't been using it to its full potential. "We only had a few users," he says, "and they sort of used it as a stand alone application, passing it on to the next person when they got tired of using it. That approach was our fault, not ACT!s. It was a duff implementation by us and we hadn't thought through what we wanted to achieve, it was a personal piece of software, not a corporate one."
That all changed when HFL decided to implement a corporate wide programme called "Ask Anyone". The point of the programme was simple as Nick explains.
"We wanted anyone in the company to be able to properly answer enquiries from either customers or suppliers, not just a few. Any enquiry at all to do with our business and so we wanted a CRM system that could support that function as well as perform it's more traditional role. It's all part of our philosophy of an open, team-based culture which generates high quality results inside challenging time scales."

Out of the box and into action
Nick made a conscious decision about how he wanted to implement SalesLogix. "We wanted it as it came, straight out of the box," he says. This is slightly unusual as one of SalesLogix great strengths is its ability to be customised to each customer's needs. Nick agrees, but his logic is impeccable.
"We didn't want to specify all kinds of customisation in advance and then find we'd asked for totally the wrong thing," he explains. "We selected SalesLogix on the basis that it was an out of the box solution, but we had the capacity to bend it as we saw the need to meet our needs. And that's what we've done, with the help of DMC."
