Making the most of ACT!

In a recent interview with Sage, DMC's Software's Managing Director, Mike Ramsay shared his enthusiasm for ACT! and explained why contact management systems are so important.

Tell us about how you first got involved in ACT!?

"It was by pure chance! I used to have another business in business-to-business marketing, where I had to compile the stats on how many calls were taken, who called in/out, update customer records for 36 members of staff every night, which took until 10pm, and I got utterly sick of it! I wanted a database to log all of this information/data in and simplify the job, so in 1995 I bought my first copy of ACT! I installed it and absolutely loathed it, so over the Christmas holidays I took it home to play with it and test it out, and by the New Year I absolutely loved it. I immediately knew that one day I was going to sell this product to our customers, as it did everything I needed and more."
 
"In April 2001, I started DMC Software to sell ACT! and we’ve added other products and Sage solutions along the way."
 
What should a customer consider when thinking about implementing a contact management solution?
 
“Businesses need to consider that it’s not just the software they’re implementing; it’s a culture and discipline. It’s vital that the customer gets their people to use the software correctly, to allow them to understand the benefits and make it an integral part of their business culture.”
 
“The biggest mistake is the customer not selling it to their people. I always recommend making the correct entry of information and updates a part of their people’s daily KPIs. Managing the data correctly and pulling together as a team is vital to an implementation’s success."
 
“They should sell it to their people as a value-add; think of the benefits to them. The customer wants them to make more money. The system helps them to do this by making them more efficient and inevitably this makes them more successful in their roles.”
 
What type of businesses do you find purchase ACT!?
 
“That’s an easy one! It’s any business that has customers, basically any company that needs to manage its relationships with customers and/or users, or wants to sell anything to anyone, whether that’s B2C or B2B. If a company has contacts, or more than one person dealing with different individuals, they need a contact management solution.”
 
What are the benefits for the sales person/manager and the business itself?
 
“For the sales person, they can easily and clearly see what they’re doing, when they need to perform specific jobs or tasks and efficiently manage their own contacts and pipeline. The Sales Manager can get a quick and easy view of what their sales people are doing. It makes their job more efficient and it means that the business itself runs more smoothly."
 
“DMC wouldn’t be where it is today without a CRM system. We’d need more staff to do what we achieve on a daily basis and this would fundamentally affect the bottom line. Our profits and success are the result of simple, streamlined processes to support our people through efficient contact management."
 
What ACT! associated services do you offer to your customers?
 
“This is a very exciting area. We offer full implementation including training and support with the option of three different levels of training. We have our own support and developer team to support our customers’ queries, issues and needs."
 
“We’ve also got increasing amounts of bespoke work, as ACT!’s opening up a whole new world of opportunities to our customers. As it’s based on a .Net platform, we can do amazing things with bespoke work and really take our implementations and customers’ needs to the next level. The stability of the system’s vital to our customer base, and the .Net platform provides this perfectly.”
 
ACT! Premium enables customers to access their data over the web. How critical do you think this is to business?
 
“It’s become increasingly critical. We’re currently working on software as a service and will be offering ACT! as a hosted solution to some customers.
This opens up a whole new world of possibilities and enables us to offer ACT! to a whole new customer base who don’t want to invest in IT hardware. I’m really excited about this – it’s the future!”
 
What’s your favourite thing about ACT!?
 
“The simplicity of it; it’s very easy to use. The investment returns are fantastic. All in all, it’s awesome!"
 
“How can you run a business without knowing your customers? It’s as essential to a business as an accounts package, especially in this climate, where your existing customer base is the cornerstone of your business. If I were starting a business from scratch today, I’d have no hesitation in buying ACT!”
